Common on a range of vehicles (including BMW cars fitted with the N47 2.0 diesel engine), timing chains are an important part of the engine. Ensuring your timing chain is in good health is a must, and proper maintenance can help prevent more expensive engine issues.

DO I HAVE A TIMING BELT OR A CHAIN?

Whilst they serve a similar role, not all engines have timing chains, some have belts. An easy way to check your engine and look for the following:

  • Timing belts are made of rubber, and look like a large rubber band with teeth on the inside facing. They are quieter and cheaper, but wear faster.

  • Timing chains are metal, and look similar to a bicycle chain. They last longer, but can result in noisier engines.

Chains and belts are often covered by plastic or metal trim and panels, so it's always worth checking with our team if you are not sure.
